THE WATCH LIST: JEREMY KIRKLAND

September 09, 2019 by David Coggins in Etc.

You know and love Jeremy Kirkland because he invented the podcast. Well if he didn’t invent it, with Blamo! he made a place for himself having enlightened, enthusiastic conversations about style with the people you want to hear from. And a few you might not want to hear from (I am confident that I was Jeremy’s only guest who ever drank Riesling during the recording). But don’t let his friendliness fool you, he’s insightful, opinionated and informed. He’s an insider in the best sense, knowledgable about the specifics of how the menswear industry works (or doesn’t) . He also knows how to make his guests comfortable enough to open up. A veteran of music world, Jeremy is a good resource for sonic pioneering (there are a few audio choices here). Perhaps most importantly, he looks good with a mustache and good in a suit. It’s great to have Jeremy on The Watch List. Let’s bid, kids!

safari-jacket.jpg

Banana Republic Vtg 80s Mill Valley Men Safari Jacket Khaki Drawstring Cargo M, $75
The safari jacket is one of those pieces that I’ve always wanted but never picked up. The sweet spot is a vibe somewhere between Hemingway and Yves Saint Laurent.

thelonius-monk.jpg

Thelonious Monk Quartet Poster The Commercial, $40

I have a habit of collecting concert posters and have a large collection of 60’s era jazz masters including Thelonious Monk. As a quick background, Europe was one the first places to truly embrace these musicians for the legends they truly were. So holy hell, did they sound fantastic. This is from arguably one of the quartet’s best European tours, most likely from the Palais de la Mutualité in March of ’66. DM me for the bootleg.

[Editor’s Note: This is an amazing image crop even by eBay standards. Love the outlet! -DC]

sierra.jpg

Vtg 70s 80s Sierra Designs 60/40 Jacket Mountain Parka Mens S Hiking Shell Coat, $120

If you don’t own a 60/40, how can you say you lived!? One of the greatest jackets in history. Wear it with jeans, with a suit, with whatever. I may or not have more than one of these but am always on the hunt for one more. FYI if you ever find a multi-color one, buy it immediately. They’re ultra rare and usually go for 1500-2k these days.

marantz.jpg

Marantz 2245 Receiver 45WPC Repaired, Recapped, Serviced, LEDs, $190

These Marantz receivers are all over the map on eBay these days. Many are barely working or poorly serviced. This is a good one. 45W per channel. Put on your favorite Steely Dan record and GO.

[Editor’s Note: This will be the only time Steely Dan is ever mentioned on this website. -DC.]

yamaha.jpg

Yamaha NS-10M Studio Vintage Monitor Speakers (Matching Pair) From Japan, $380
On the hi-fi tip. Notice in nearly every late 70’s picture of Lindsey Buckingham behind a soundboard, a small pair of speakers rested on top. Yamaha NS-10’s. Speakers designed to enhance nothing from the recording. You hear the music the way it was mastered. Discontinued in 2001 and were in production for around 20+ years. You can still find a bunch of them for a reasonable price.

seiko.jpg

Vintage seiko pogue chronograph watch 6139-6002, $720

One of my favorite watches ever. The Seiko 6139 (Pogue). Named after Colonel Pogue who brought his personal Seiko on the NASA Skylab mission. It’s an automatic chronograph and one of the first created. These are just fun watches. I’m always on the lookout for examples that haven’t had parts replaced or messed with. This appears to be pretty good and is worth adding to any vintage watch collection.

THE WATCH LIST is a regular series where friends reveal their auction obsessions.
